Flash Photography Basic Concepts

Fact 1
  • Every flash photography is two exposures in one (ambient light exposure and a flash exposure)
Fact 2
  • Fill flash can be used when the subject is backlit or sidelit to eliminate silhouettes or shadows.
Fact 3
  • Flash exposure is not affected by shutter speed but it is affected by aperture and iso settings.
Fact 4
  • Flash illumination is dramatically affected by distance.
Fact 5
  • Your camera measures ambient light and flash illumination separately.
Fact  6
  • With automatic flash metering, the flash illumination is measured after the shutter button is pressed, and the flash output is adjusted accordingly.
Fact 7
  • Every SLR camera with a mechanical shutter box has a maximum flash sync shutter speed.
Fact 8
  • Harsh lighting, washed out subjects and red eye can be illuminated by using diffusers and light bouncing.
Fact 9
  • It is possible to change the order of when the flash fires using "Rear Curtain Sync"
Fact 10
  • Removing the flash from the top of the camera helps eliminate red eye and unflattering shadows.

Year in Photos: 2015

Landscape

The photo has rule of thirds because the eclipse is at one of the corners. The light source is the eclipse. This is a natural photo because eclipses appear naturally. The photographer enhanced the photo by making the light from the eclipse stand out. The photographer probably had to get to a high open place with no trees in the way to take the picture.

Landscape/Urban

This photo shows perspective because the photo is looking up at the smoke. The light source in this photo is probably the sun behind the clouds and smoke. This photo is natural because the volcano is natural. The photographer enhanced the photo by making the sky look a bit more orange. The photographer probably had to get to a position where he could get a full shot of the volcano and the smoke above it.

Landscape

This photo shows perspective because the tornado looks huge compared to the houses. The light source is the sun. This photo is natural because tornados appear naturally. The photograph probably enhanced the photo by making it look more sharper and clearer. The photographer probably had to get to a place where he could get a full shot of the tornado .

Landscape

This Photo shows perspective because it is looking down on the forest on fire. The light source is the fire. This photo is natural because forest fires often occur naturally. The photo was enhanced to make the fire brighter and stand out more. The photographer had to get to a high place away from the fire so he could take the picture.

Landscape

This photo shows rule of thirds because the guy is at the bottom of the screen. The light source are the stars. The photo could be natural or it could not because stars are naturally but the color looks fake. The photo might have been enhanced to make the stars different colors. The photographer had to get to a low place where he could get a good shot of the man and the stars.

Landscape

This photo shows rule of thirds because the horses are on the corner of the photo. The light source is the sun. This is natural because the volcano erupted natural and the horses are real. The photo might have been enhanced to make the horses look sharper and darken their color. The photographer had to get to a place far away from the ash and close to the horses so he could take the picture.

Landscape

The photo shows balance because the explosion is going through the middle of the screen and its cut perfectly in half. The light source is the sun.The photo was probably enhanced to make the explosion look clearer and darker. The photographer probably had to get in a plane and go high up in the air to take a picture of the explosion.
